As a scholar of education, I am committed to working with communities in ways that promote equity for students. In the 2013-2014 academic year, I joined the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University and became acquainted with President Crow’s vision for a New American University and the design aspirations of connection to the local community, transforming society, and catalyzing social change. The Teachers College, with a vision to being a constructive force in education, graduates more than a thousand new and continuing educators each year. Why I Teach is an experimental community art project designed to create a space for graduates to reflect on why they have come to the teaching profession and how they fit in with the ideals of ASU’s New American University and as educators completing their work at Teachers College.
